The use of medications by elderly men with polypharmacy: representations and practices / Uso de medicamentos por homens idosos com polifarmacia: representacoes e praticas / Uso de medicamentos por hombres ancianos con polifarmacia: representaciones y practicas

OBJECTIVES: this study aimed to investigate and understand the use of medications by elderly men, their representations and the subsequent practices. METHODS: this is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study, in which there participated 17 elderly men, with polypharmacy, and assisted under the Family Health Strategy in the Municipality of Dourados in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS). RESULTS: the results show that most of the medications are used for treating cardiovascular disorders. The elderly men develop strategies considering the prescription of these, adapting in line with their own perceptions and meanings. From these tactics emerge representations on youth and old age, in which old age is associated with illness. In addition, practices were observed which sought to associate the use of medications with medicinal plants, re-signifying the process of being ill. Different perspectives of masculinity permeate the use of medications, sometimes reinforcing hegemonic conceptions, and sometimes revealing alternate models of masculinity. The woman is present in the care with the use of the medications. CONCLUSIONS: in this context, the health team, above all that of nursing, must assist the elderly man in his practices of medication, taking into account his representations, his protagonism, and the role of the woman as a support in the care. .

OBJETIVOS: este estudo objetivou conhecer e compreender o uso de medicamentos por homens idosos, suas representações e práticas subsequentes. MÉTODO: trata-se de estudo qualitativo, descritivo e exploratório, do qual participaram 17 homens idosos, com polifarmácia e assistidos em Estratégias de Saúde da Família do Município de Dourados, MS. RESULTADOS: os resultados revelam que a maior parte dos medicamentos é empregada no tratamento de desordens cardiovasculares. O homem idoso desenvolve estratégias frente à prescrição, adaptando-se conforme percepções e significados próprios. Dessas táticas, emergem representações sobre juventude e velhice, em que o envelhecimento está associado à doença. Também se observaram práticas que procuram associar o uso de medicamentos às plantas medicinais, ressignificando o processo de adoecer. Diferentes perspectivas de masculinidade perpassam o uso de medicamentos, ora reforçando concepções hegemônicas, ora revelando modelos alternativos de masculinidade. A mulher está presente no cuidado com o uso dos medicamentos. CONCLUSÕES: nesse contexto, a equipe de saúde, sobretudo de enfermagem, deve assistir o homem idoso em suas práticas de medicação, considerando suas representações, seu protagonismo e o papel da mulher como apoiadora no cuidado. .

El hombre anciano desarrolla estrategias frente a la prescripción, adaptándose conforme a percepciones y significados propios. De estas tácticas, emergen representaciones sobre la juventud y vejez, en que el envejecimiento está asociado a la enfermedad. También se observaron prácticas que procuran asociar el uso de medicamentos a plantas medicinales, dando nuevo significando al proceso de enfermarse. Diferentes perspectivas de masculinidad dan soporte al uso de medicamentos, reforzando concepciones hegemónicas o revelando modelos alternativos de masculinidad. La mujer está presente en el cuidado en el uso de los medicamentos. CONCLUSIONES: en este contexto, el equipo de salud, sobre todo de enfermería debe asistir al hombre anciano en sus prácticas de medicación, considerando sus representaciones, su protagonismo y el papel de la mujer apoyando el cuidado. .

Objetivou-se, neste estudo, conhecer e compreender as representações sobre o uso de plantas medicinais por homens idosos, assistidos em Estratégias de Saúde da Família de Dourados, MS. Participaram deste estudo 18 homens idosos com idade igual ou superior a 60 anos, fazendo uso de quatro ou mais medicamentos. Trata-se de pesquisa qualitativa, descritiva e exploratória. Os resultados apontaram que ainda existe o consumo de plantas medicinais entre os idosos, principalmente no tratamento de morbidades menores. As representações sobre as plantas medicinais parecem ancoradas na concepção de segurança, ou seja, são naturais e apresentam poucos efeitos colaterais. Seu uso é feito concomitantemente com os medicamentos industrializados, sem atentar para os riscos das interações. Os homens idosos utilizam as plantas medicinais sem, no entanto, relatar aos profissionais de saúde. Logo, faz-se necessária a educação permanente da equipe de saúde e da enfermagem, voltada para a fitoterapia, visando contribuir para o uso seguro e eficaz das plantas medicinais.

El objetivo de este estudio fue conocer y comprender las representaciones y el uso de plantas medicinales por los mayores asistidos en Estrategias de Salud de la Familia de Dourados/MS. Participaron de ese estudio 18 hombres de edad con edad igual o superior a 60 años, haciendo uso de cuatro o más medicamentos. Se trató de investigación cualitativa, descriptiva y exploratoria. Los resultados apuntaron que aun existe el consumo de plantas medicinales entre los mayores, principalmente en el tratamiento de mortalidades menores. Las representaciones sobre las plantas medicinales parecen ancladas en la concepción de seguridad, o sea, son naturales y pocos efectos colaterales. Su uso es hecho concomitantemente con los medicamentos industrializados, sin atentar los riesgos de las interacciones. Los mayores utilizan las plantas medicinales sin, sin embargo, relatar a los profesionales de salud. Luego, se hace necesario la educación permanente del equipo de salud y de la enfermería vuelta para la fitoterapia, aportando al uso seguro y eficaz de las plantas medicinales.
